I just wrote a proposal to promote urban agriculture which include community gardens. The statistics I found are incredible. For years now, residents of urban cities in Eastern and Southern Africa have utilized community gardens or urban agriculture to provide for themselves. I don't personally have any big experience with community garden but growing up in Liberia, my mother always grown fruits and vegetables behind our house. Our daily pepper, tomato etc., came from my mother gardens. I think it’s a good thing that you are doing.

I support the idea of involving the vulnerable population of society to improve their living conditions. This is a great opportunity for people like myself who want to make a difference in the world. I am currently working on a proposal to promote urban agriculture (UA) in Liberia, West Africa. What is the possibility of being funded through this program?

I have just recently started thinking about Community Gardening - I love having a garden but 1. its a ton of work...(enjoyable but a lot) 2. I really don't use all that much of what I grow (I love what I do use, but I give a lot away) anyway I think that this community gardening thing might help - and I have some neighbors I think would be interested. anyone out there have any experience with community gardens??

Greetings from Asantewaa Harris of CVC

I was on a brief visit to Springfield and picked up a copy of "The Women's Times" and was so happy to read about GtC and the work that you & Qumaria are doing. Community Vision Council has been working with Black farmers, growers, students, teachers and Green companies since 2004. We launched the CVC Farmers Market in 2005 with the Afrikan Zion Organic Roots Farm in Vermont. We are now growing our own food in community gardens as well as front & back yards.

We are planning a return trip August 21-23 and would like to visit any GtC sites you recommend. We are building a "Urban/Rural Exchange" project and would like to connect our resources.

I love that you have put this into words, and I have always found that this is exactly what community gardening is all about.

I would like to suggest a different simile for these conversations, in order to put them in a positive light. I believe they are like the volunteer plants that spring up in unexpected places, offspring of a previous year. They are a pleasant surprise, and when found, we often nurture them like the "planned plantings." They sometimes become even more special to us, dispite requiring extra care since their location was not planned for.
